Plan International’s leadership schools in Guatemala, are safe community spaces where adolescent girls and young women can meet to talk about the issues affecting them. They have been set up to encourage girls to fight against gender discrimination and learn the skills they need to be future leaders in their communities. At the leadership school meetings, the girls often talk about the barriers they face and work together to develop their voices and advocacy skills through group exercises. In the rural department of Alta Verapaz, which has one of the highest poverty rates in the country, many girls live in isolated communities which they are often excluded from.
