Plan International Australia is calling for federal politicians to support an independent member’s bill requiring the urgent evacuation of refugee and asylum seeker children from Nauru.
Plan International Australia’s Director of Advocacy & Community Engagement, Hayley Cull, implored federal politicians to put an end to the suffering of the children on Nauru, and listen to the Australian community’s wishes.
“It’s the last day Parliament is sitting, and the last opportunity for our leaders to do the right thing and put the best interests of these innocent children before politics,” said Ms Cull.
“We know that children and families are enduring horrific psychological suffering, with children as young as nine having attempted suicide.
“We also know that the vast majority of Australians are appalled by what these children are being put through – we’re calling for all federal politicians to listen to the people, and stop this needless and inhumane suffering.”
About Plan International
Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.
We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected. Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.
We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.
We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 75 years, and are now active in more than 70 countries.
