Plan International Australia welcomes significant moment for refugees
Plan International Australia has welcomed the passing of a bill in Parliament to help bring sick refugees in offshore detention to Australia for medical treatment.
The legislation came after a medical crisis in Australia’s offshore detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru, which prompted a significant public campaign by dozens of organisations, including Plan International, independent MPs and medical professionals.
Plan International Australia CEO Susanne Legena said the medevac bill passing was a significant moment that recognised the compassion of the Australian people.
“I welcome this bill, which puts the safety of lives first, and thank the members of parliament who worked together to find a humane solution for refugees and asylum seekers,” said Ms Legena.
“Australia’s policy of offshore detention is a black mark in our history – a cruel experiment, which has scarred so many children and families.
“It is deeply disappointing to hear that Prime Minister Scott Morrison now plans to re-open the detention centre on Christmas Island, as this bill only applies to people currently on Manus and Nauru.”
“The Australian people do not want the inhumane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers to continue.”
