Statement: North Darfur Zamzam camp attacks

North Darfur’s Zamzam camp, which is currently home to half a million Sudanese people who have been forced to flee fighting, has come under intense attack, killing and injuring civilians.

In response to attacks on North Darfur’s famine stricken Zamzam displacement camp, Mohammed Qazilbash, Country Director for Plan International Sudan has responded:

“It is deplorable to see that Zamzam camp, which is currently home to half a million Sudanese people who have been forced to flee fighting, has come under intense attack, killing and injuring civilians.”

“The people here – including many children – are already facing starvation as they are largely cut off from outside assistance. Aid agencies have struggled to reach the camp with urgently needed food, water and medicine as access to the area remains a huge challenge.

“Families have already left everything behind in Darfur, desperately seeking safety and have been living in very grim conditions, now they are forced to flee again. How much more can they take?

“All parties must respect international humanitarian law, immediately end attacks targeting civilians and allow unhindered access for humanitarian relief. We need to see urgent political dialogue between parties and find a way to end this devastating conflict which is tearing the country apart.”
